1945 Special Order

Special Order
Tottenham, 1945

This frame is a special order from 1945 (based on the serial number); it was picked up in June of 1946 (see the original receipt above). The size is 23 1/4" centre to top. Total price: 19 pounds, 19 shillings and 6 pence. The receipt lists it as a Super Special, but it bears lugs we would normally see on a Brilliant model.

From a letter dated 1955, we presume that it was resprayed (in light blue) by Hetchins. The subsequent owner had the blue stripped off and discovered full-chrome beneath (as above). The respray probably saved the original chrome finish from deteriorating completely (like the Maltese Falcon).

The components are as follows: Reynolds continental bars, stem, seatpost, and alloy lamp bracket; 1940's Brooks B15 saddle, Harden flip flop hubs, Constrictor rims, Resillion brakes; 1948 Chater Lea round-arm crank, chainwheel & pedals; bluemels airweight aluminium mudguards.

The bike had rested in an attic for 50 years before being offered for sale by original owner's family. A fabulous find indeed--a time capsule from the past.
